The degree of whiteness achieved will vary from patient to patient depending on the initial cause of the discoloration and the type of bleaching process chosen. Most often Whitening is not a one-time procedure. It will need to be repeated from time to time if you want to maintain the brighter colour. The options are In-Office whitening and Take Home which includes bleaching trays and over the counter products like toothpaste.

In-Office: The process is done on the dental chair and usually takes about an hour. The procedure involves application of a tooth whitening gel containing between 25% to 40% hydrogen peroxide, and then aiming a special LED light at your teeth for three 20-minute intervals, with reapplication of the gel between intervals until the desired shade is achieved. At times bleaching trays may be given for follow at home.

Take home: A mold of your teeth is taken from which custom trays are fabricated. The custom trays are designed to fit your teeth perfectly. You are then given less concentrated whitening gels to dispense on the trays which are worn for a specific time. Results are much delayed with this option.
